Land Projects
The primary purpose of land trusts is to hold title to land and dedicate it to conservation purposes. Most land trusts try to protect land from development and utilize it only for wildlife and natural resources conservation. CoLT follows this pattern in acquiring land, setting up a management plan and coordinating volunteer stewards to care for the land. In addition, we look for grants to do specific improvement projects, both natural resources enhancement and facilities for the visitor.
CoLT is also has the responsibility for a public recreation site, Seaside Beach, where the human presence is considered as important as the natural habitats. This interface demands management that is different from the exclusively conservation lands. Therefore we do parking and restroom improvements to share this great beach with thousands of visitors every year. We believe that people who love the beach will also help us maintain it and support the necessary management.
CoLT is interested in acquiring more lands for conservation, especially in our main areas of interest: estuaries, wetlands, pygmy forest, coastal prairie and bluff scrub, riparian forest and historic sites. Landowners interested in donating land or conservation easements can learn more about these subjects on our Protecting Your Land page.
Our current land holding are the 52-acre Enchanted Meadows Wetland Sanctuary and 14-acre Seaside Beach and Meadow.
